"Savannah" the Tortoise

This is Savannah. She is one, if not the most interesting animal we study here at the research and discovery center. Savannah is indigenous to the African Sub-Sahara. The Sulcatas are the third largest tortoises in the world. Savannah weighs about 20 lbs. Sulcatas can weigh anywhere from 20-110 lbs. Her diet consists of alfalfa hay, fresh grass, dandelions, shredded carrots and collard greens. Sulcatas reproduce by laying eggs under the sand and a couple weeks later the hatchlings emerge. The newborns are 1 1/2- 2 inches in length and weigh less than one ounce.

Savannah was generously donated to us by the Berkshire Museum -- with many thanks!
